Fake ‘GOIL investment project’ circulates online- Mahama’s voice cloned in scam video

A fraudulent online investment scheme falsely claiming to be backed by President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) is circulating on social media, promising unrealistic profits of over GHC15,000 per month with a minimum investment of GHC3,000.

The scheme, branded as the “GOIL Project”, alleges that it was “personally developed” by Edward Abambire Bawa, with the supposed endorsement of President Mahama.

However, official checks reveal that neither GOIL nor any government agency has launched such a program.

Digital forensics experts have warned that scammers are increasingly using AI-generated voices and deepfake videos to impersonate prominent figures and mislead the public.

In this case, the President’s voice appears to have been cloned to lend credibility to the fraudulent investment campaign.
