Deputy Transport Minister Backs RMU’s Drive to Become Centre of Excellence

Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the Regional Maritime University (RMU) to become a true centre of excellence in maritime education.

She noted that government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, is determined to create sustainable jobs for the youth. According to her, the RMU’s mandate of training seafarers and maritime professionals directly aligns with this vision and positions the institution as a strategic partner in Ghana’s development.

Speaking during a working visit to the University on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Hon. Affo-Toffey said the RMU has the potential to drive growth in both onshore and offshore sectors of the maritime industry while supporting the country’s blue economy agenda.

“This University is strategically placed to play a key role in the 24-hour economy by training maritime professionals to boost Ghana’s human resource base,” she emphasized.

The Jomoro legislator added that the visit formed part of a seven-day tour of agencies under the Ministry to familiarize herself with their operations and challenges.

“Effective governance begins with listening and collaboration. Today’s engagement offers me the opportunity to learn directly from you and understand the issues affecting the University as a premier maritime institution,” she said.

Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., highlighted the institution’s achievements over its 42 years of existence, noting that it has produced several professionals across the sub-region. He disclosed that the University would next month launch its blue economy programme in line with government policy and appealed for further support to expand its impact.

The Deputy Minister later toured the Tema Shipyard, Railway Development Authority, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, where she was briefed on their mandates, progress, and challenges.
