Prof Seidu Ali is Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission

The Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Prof Seidu Alidu, has been appointed the new Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission.

Prof Seidu Ali, an Associate Professor brings to bear his extensive experience in academia, public policy, and governance to help transform the Water Resources Commission into an enviable institution.

His appointment comes in the midst of pollution to the country’s water bodies as a result of illegal mining activities.

His expertise is therefore critical in ensuring sustainable water governance for the country to achieve its environmental and developmental goals.

The new Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission was selected as a Donahue Institute Scholar in United States Political Thought at the University of Massachusetts in 2014.

Prof Ali also served as a fellow at the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), where his research focused on parliaments and democracy on the African continent.

He worked with a number of international and local policy institutions and think tanks in a collaborative role.

Notable among these institutions are the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) in Nairobi, Kenya; the Centre for International Development Issues Nijmegen in the Netherlands; the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Sussex; the Institute for Democratic Governance AND the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung.

The rest are the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); the Varieties of Democracy Project at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden; the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College; the German-African Governance Partnership Organization; and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) in New York.

 Prof Seidu Ali has a wide publication in his chosen field of Political Science with his articles appearing in journals such as Peace Review, Criminal Justice Studies, Transitional Justice Review, Journal of African Political Economy and Development, Contemporary Journal of African Development, and Ghana Studies.

He is a co-editor of the African Yearbook and serves on the editorial board of the African Journal of Defence, Security and Strategy.

Prof Ali is the lead editor of two key volumes; Contemporary Issues in Ghana: Economy, Development, Society and Gender and Contemporary Issues in Ghana: Politics, Security, Conflicts and Identity. In addition, he is co-editor of two forthcoming books, Political Institutions and Communication Perspectives in Ghana: Three Decades of Ghana’s Fourth Republic and Public Sector Management and Economic Governance in Ghana: Three Decades of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, both to be published by Palgrave Macmillan.

His new role is expected to benefit from this broad-based experience and scholarly background, particularly in guiding water resource policy and governance initiatives.
