The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced plans for the construction of a 3.6-kilometer bridge over the Afram River, connecting Ekye-Amanfrom to Adowso in the Eastern Region.
Speaking during a tour of the river on Monday, April 28, 2025, the minister revealed that despite two previous unsuccessful attempts to build the bridge, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the project must now be delivered under the Big Push initiative.
“Two attempts have been made so far to get that bridge done, but they did not materialize. The President has instructed that under the Big Push, this bridge must be completed to connect the South and the North. The potentials here are great,” Agbodza stated.
He emphasised that the bridge’s design would prioritise cost-effectiveness and local engineering solutions, ensuring durability and efficiency.
“We should deploy the best possible design that is efficient and cheaper, and the consultant responsible will ensure that the quality of work done will outlive us and deliver value,” he added.
The Afram River bridge project is expected to significantly boost agriculture and economic development in the Afram Plains area. It will also support the establishment of a satellite campus for the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.
Governs Agbodza expressed confidence that the bridge would be completed within President Mahama’s current term in office.
“We can do this. If by next year we secure additional support, it would help, but even without it, we are determined to start. Even with all the funding in place, it would typically take two to three years to complete,” he said.
The bridge is considered a critical piece of infrastructure to unlock the potential of the Afram Plains, linking the Eastern, Ashanti, and Oti regions.
The government’s renewed commitment follows two previously failed attempts under earlier administrations.
