A growing number of staff within the Volta River Authority (VRA), have voiced strong support for Mr. Ekow Obeng Kenzo as the substantive candidate for the position of Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), citing his extensive experience and results-driven leadership style.
On January 18, 2025, Mr. Obeng Kenzo was appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Volta River Authority (VRA), following a brief handover ceremony during which the outgoing CEO, Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa, officially transferred leadership to Obeng Kenzo.
Mr. Kenzo, who served as Deputy Chief Executive (Engineering & Operations) in the previous administration, earned recognition for his decisive approach to operational management and his commitment to modernizing key aspects of the Authority’s infrastructure.
Many employees have praised his forward-thinking strategies and ability to lead during challenging times, including the complex 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage.
Sources within the VRA highlighted Mr. Kenzo’s role in swiftly responding to the power crisis during the transition period.
They emphasized that his actions, though tough, were necessary to prevent even greater environmental and structural risks. Staff familiar with the operation commended him for making timely decisions in a high-stakes environment, ensuring long-term safety and stability for communities along the Volta Lake.
“Kenzo is results-oriented. His leadership has brought stability to the operations of the VRA. He’s a technocrat who understands the inner workings of the VRA, and personally, I’m confident he is the right person to move the VRA forward, irrespective of what others may say,” said one staffer who chose to remain anonymous.
“VRA needs continuity, and Obeng Kenzo is the steady hand for the job. It’s important to look beyond party considerations for sensitive roles like this,” another staff member added.
Contrary to earlier misrepresentations, several VRA employees have described Mr. Kenzo as a firm but fair leader who prioritizes efficiency and professionalism. Team members say his leadership has brought renewed discipline and a results-oriented culture to the organization.
“Mr. Kenzo challenges us to bring our best to the table. His standards are high, but that’s exactly what we need to move the Authority forward,” said one senior staff member. “We are confident that under his guidance, VRA will continue to be a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy future.”
