Caitec defies Mahama’s order to reverse illegal landfilling at Weija Ramsar site

Transport company Caitec has yet to comply with a presidential directive to reverse the illegal reclamation of portions of the Weija Ramsar site.

President John Dramani Mahama, during a tour of flood-prone areas in Accra, ordered the company to undo the reclamation at their own cost to allow for easy dredging as Accra prepares for the rains.

However, an inspection conducted by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has revealed that the president’s orders have not been heeded.

Speaking to the media on the matter on Thursday, April 10, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed disappointment at the company’s failure to act.

She stressed that the government would not hesitate to take matters into its own hands if the company continued to defy the directive.

“We came here, and His Excellency told them that they should do two things: they should scoop all the materials that they used to fill this place and also dredge the place at their own cost. We sent a letter to them only for us to come here today and see what we are seeing. So we will go back, remobilize, and come back with our machine to do whatever we want to do.

“There are a lot of machines there, so releasing the machine shouldn’t be a problem for them. So this is intentional, and I don’t know who is compromising with them and the entire assembly to overlook the messages that have been sent to them.

“They are aware that the exercise is to start today, only for us to come and meet what we just met. So we will go back and do what we have to do. If the company refuses, we will enforce the law,” she stated.
