Stakeholders push for stronger Inter-Agency action in Atewa galamsey fight

Stakeholders in the Atewa Enclave have called for close collaboration between state agencies to make a headway in the fight against illegal mining.

According to the group, the lack of communication between the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency, logistical constraints of the Forestry Commission and police, and the neglect of inputs from the local people, among others, remain top major concerns raised by stakeholders as challenges confronting the galamsey fight in the region.

Addressing the media after a Convening Mitigation engagement on the adverse effects of Small Scale Mining in Ghana at Asiakwa in the Abuakwa South Municipality, the Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, called for synergy among state agencies in the galamsey fight.

“As we are all aware galamsey is getting out of hand, and we really need to come together to deal with this matter. As you are all witnesses to today’s meeting, a lot of the issues coming up tell that we still need to have collaboration among the state agencies,” he stated.

A Lecturer in Security, Development and Leadership at the Kings College in London Dr. Clement Sefa Nyarko emphasizing the need for close and targeted collaboration among all actors called for an end to the silo attempts by different state agencies in tackling the menace.

“The challenge is that there is no synergy among the stakeholders involved. Different state agencies are trying to act, but without a collective goal setting that is aligned with the interests of the members of society, with the state actors, there will always be a weakness with the approach in dealing with a challenge like this,” he stated.
