Only President John Dramani Mahama has the authority to retain or dismiss the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, according to the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi.
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ghana are calling for the immediate dismissal of Martin Ayisi, citing his alleged failure to address the country’s illegal mining crisis.
The CSOs—including A Rocha Ghana, Kasa Initiative, Nature and Development Foundation, and the Concerned Citizens of Atewa—argue that the current leadership of the Minerals Commission has failed to effectively combat illegal mining, which continues to devastate water bodies, degrade land, and threaten food and water security, public health, international trade, and national security.
Speaking in a recent interview on Accra-based Asempa FM, Gyamfi emphasized that President Mahama is strategic in his decision-making.
“It is the President’s prerogative to hire and fire. At the right time, he will make the right decision,” Gyamfi said.
He further praised Mahama’s governance experience, saying, “President Mahama has vast experience in governance, and he has a reason for every decision he makes. He is a leader who loves Ghana.
