The independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North in the Ashanti region, Ohene Kwame Frimpong has broken the language barrier on the floor of Ghana’s Parliament when he made his first contribution speaking the native Akan vernacular(twi).
Mr Frimpong a first term lawmaker broke his silence using his mother tongue since becoming a legislator a month in a contribtion to a statement made by the Member for Kintampo South, Felicia Adjei on the tourism potential of her varea.
The Asante Akim North Legislator urged the need for street lights in the country to be improved to ensure visibility in the night on major towns across the country and emphasised that prostitutes all over on some principal streets of the capital, Accra is a turn off for visiting tourist.
The young lawmaker also urged the need for the country’s poor roadnetworks especially those leading to torist sites to be fixed.
He mentioned places like Hwidiem and onyimso in the Asante Akim North with water falls that needs urgent attention from the central government to make them attractive in promoting the tourism potential of the country.
Despite opposition from some members of the minority caucus against his choice on language on floor, members of the majority cheered him on.
He was highly commended for the bolden effort to break the language barrier on the floor.
On his part, Tamale Central MP and Minister for Environment Science, Technology and Innovation applauded Mr Ohene Kwame Frimpong for a good work done.
He urged Parliament to put proper measures in place so that all members can speak their preferred local dialect that can be translated automatically to the understanding of all members and the general public.
