President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the immediate past Member of Parliament for Bongo in the Upper East region, Edward Abambire Bawa as acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
Mr Bawa’s appointment takes effect Friday, January 17, 2025, in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L.64).
The former lawmaker’s appointment which underscores President Mahama’s commitment to ensuring effective leadership at the national oil company is however pending the required advice from the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama in a formal letter communicating the choice commended Mr Bawa and expressed best wishes to him as the new GNPC Boss.

Edward Abambire Bawa was born on September 1, 1973, hails from Bongo-Lungu in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
He holds a Bachelor of Education in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast and a Master of Business Administration in Business Finance from the University of Liverpool.
The new GNPC CEO also posses a Certificate in Development Communications, a Certificate in Risk Communications, a Postgraduate certificate from the Harvard School of Public Health, a Postgraduate certificate from the University of Southern California and a Postgraduate certificate from the Setym International.
Mr Edward Abambire Bawa worked as the Head of Communication for World Bank Project (Oil and Gas Capacity building Project) at the Ministry of Energy before he was elected as the Member of parliament (MP) for Bongo Constituency in 2016 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress and was re-elected in 2020 serving as a two-term lawmaker.
Some of the committees Edward Abambire Bawa served on whiles in parliament includes the Poverty Reduction Strategy and the Mines and Energy Committees.
Edward Abambire Bawa lost his third term relection bid to represent his people in the legislature when he failed to get the nod of his party during the 2023 Parliamentary Primaries of the National Democratic Congress.
