John Abdulai Jinapor, Energy and Green Transition Minister-Designate, has revealed that the John Mahama government would establish a seven-member committee to prospect the possible privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The move when materialised is expected to revitalise the power distributor which is bedevilled with so much ineffeciency.
Mr Jinapor who disclosed this before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, explained that the proposed committee’s responsibility will be to examine and propose viable models for private-sector involvement that could enhance ECG’s financial and operational sustainability.
The move comes as a result of ECG’s longstanding inefficiencies leading to financial losses, power theft, and growing debt due to its inability to operate the price waterfall mechanism, which have hindered its ability deliver reliable power to ghe public.
“We believe there should be private sector participation,” Jinapor stated during the vetting. He stressed that privatisation, or some form of private-sector involvement, could provide the resources, expertise, and efficiency required to turn around ECG’s fortunes and enhance electricity supply across the country.
The Energy Minister-Designate assured a non-partisan approach would be adopted to the process whiles assuring of neutrality and the use of expertise in the composition of the committee.
“We will stay off as politicians and let them develop a framework in a transparent, open, and frank manner. Once we get the buy-in of Ghanaians, we can set standards using a Request for Proposal (RFP) or competitive tender process.”
