A total number of 40 female Members of Parliament (MPs) have been elected at the just ended general elections to represent their constituents in the 9th parliament of Ghana.
The number 40 female MPs-elect conted so far, compared to the current 8th parliament of 40 female MPs represents a consolidation of the figure as the country makes efforts to achieve gender equality in political representation.
This figure is expected to drop or increase depending on the outcome of the rest of constituencies yet to be declared.
Ghana’s parliament in July this year passed the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act.
The purpose of the bill is to effectively address social, cultural, economic and political gender imbalances in the country, stemming from historical discrimination against women and persistent patriarchal socio-cultural systems and norms.
